STEVE SMITH - Winner of the PETER WILSON Trophy with Runner Up John Broom

Sunday 10th September 2017 8:11am | KEARSNEY B.C. FINALS DAY 2017

Steve Smith retained the Peter Wilson Trophy by defeating John Broom 21 - 15 in a closely fought game on Saturday.  Steve made a positive start with the aid of his last wood on the first end to open the scoring, following up the advantage with a further 4 shots on the next two ends.  John then found his length, pulling out the stops over the following four ends, by pegging six shots without reply earning him the lead by one shot on the seventh.  6 - 5 to John.  Steve's response was to immediately up his game by securing 6 shots on the next three consecutive ends.  With the scores at 11 - 6  in Steve's favour and with Steve lying shot on the 11th end, John played a perfectly weighted wood to take the jack to the edge of the green with his ‘toucher’ in the ditch.  He added a further counter drawing to the edge of the green with his last wood.  11 – 8 to Steve.  John gained a further shot on the next end whilst Steve followed up by winning the next three ends scoring four shots.  The sixteenth to nineteenth ends went to John that saw both players now on equal scores at 15 shots apiece, John favouring the longer jacks.  On the twentieth end John pressing the advantage also held shot only to be denied by a perfect placed wood from Steve - perhaps a decisive gain as Steve then went on to take the last four ends to win by 21 shots to 15.
