Kearsney members competed in the annual mixed triples competition for the Lorraine Curling Memorial Trophy on Saturday (16th September). Thirty club members making 10 triples took part playing 3 games each over 11 ends, with 3 points for a win and 1 point for a draw, with the top 2 teams playing off in the final. After each team had completed their 3 games just 2 triples emerged with 100% records on 9 points. The triple of Fred Pontin (skip), Lyn Smith & 10 year old Tom Blackwell earned their place in the final with 3 wins, giving them 9 points, 23 ends won and a plus shot difference of 23, they were joined in the final by the triple skipped by Steve Smith, Paul Smith and Jean Gavin also on 9 points, 19 ends won and a plus shot difference of 24. In the final Steve Smiths triple got off to a good start building up an early lead over the first 5 ends, thanks to excellent lead bowling from Jean Gavin in her first year of bowling. Despite a spirited fight back from Fred Pontins squad the early lead set by Steves triple proved to difficult to claw back and Steve, Paul & Jean ran out winners by 15 shots to 6.

The 2nd leg of the Harrison Shield between Kearsney and Folkestone Park B.C. took place on Sunday (3rd September) at Folkestone. Facing a 10 shot deficit from the 1st leg, held at Kearsney in May, Kearsney needed to get off to a good start if they were to retain the Shield and the bragging rights for another year. With the scores very close at tea all was still to play for, Kearsney did overcome the 10 shots deficit and take the overall lead with just a few ends to play but Folkestone rallied and even though Kearsney won on the day by 102 shots to 97, a win of 5 shots, this was not quite enough, and the Parks managed to win back the Shield by an overall shot score over the 2 legs by 201 to 196. Well done Folkestone Park, but we will be after you next year!

A charity triples match was held at the Clubs green on Saturday (26th August) in aid of SERV (Service by Emergency Response Volunteers). SERV provides free transportation of blood, blood products and various medical equipment and medicines to and from hospitals and hospices. The volunteers operate 365 nights a year and all day at weekends and Bank Holidays. Three Kearsney members are members of SERVs volunteer force, Graham Perrin, Keith Howe & Jim Holt. Back to the match, 24 members made up 8 triples who each played 3 games of 9 ends, all against different opposition, with just the total number of shots being recorded to decide the winners. After the 3 games, the triple of Steve Smith (skip), Lyn Smith & our youngest member, Tom Blackwell came out on top recording 40 shots in their 3 games. In second place was the triple of John Broom (skip), Sheila Swinerd & Keith Hughes on 35 shots. The consolation prizes went to Alan Hare (skip), Bob Taylor & George Hornsey. Prior to the match a 'Spider' was held for a litre of Bacardi, this was won by one of our more senior members, J.J. Smith, which he later donated back to the club for auction with the proceeds going to SERV. The match raised with the aid of a well supported raffle £233.00. On behalf of SERV Graham Perrin thanked all those that made for such a successful day. See PHOTOS for pictures.
